UNCLUTTERING YOUR LIFE, IS THAT LIKE UNCLUTTERING MY FEELINGS?

Despite many attempts to de-clutter my life, I cannot for the life of me, throw out my sons' homework in elementary and my letters that were written from my other son.  I just cannot de-clutter.  I start one project then it all overcomes me.  Somehow the clutter comes back in different disarrays of what it was to begin with just stuck in different nooks and crannies of my self consciousness. And in my chaotic house.
What I didn't realize was that the emotional highs, lows and plateaus of everyday life are causing me to hold on to a lot of unnecessary stuff. The first step is to eliminating my clutter is understanding the psychological reasons behind it.  That doesn't really help me though.
Untidiness can affect more than my sanity and my surroundings--it impacts my health as well.  When things are chaotic, my body releases an excess of stress hormones cortisol. Too much cortisol can make it difficult to concentrate.  It keeps me from sleeping well and even depletes my immunity, making me more susceptible to illnesses.  Even realizing this, does not make throwing things away any easier.

Getting uncluttered is like taking a shower and I hate showers. This is said to be that I am now clean, relaxed and ready to start a new day with a shower.  Well, it doesn't work that way for me. To keep my mind, body and home clutterfree, means I need to check out the 3 main reasons why I may be collecting too much stuff and what I can do to ditch the excess. This takes guts and determination, but the resulting freedom is suppose to be worth every ounce.  Really?

Clutter Reason # 1: I am in survival mode. Subconsciously amassing and consuming to make up for something physical or emotional I have lacked in the past.  Whether it was something as a child, or another period of life, I am subconsciously soothing my feelings of emptiness, to ensure I will never be alone again.

Clutter Reason # 2: My To-Do List is to long.  Things pile up because I am too busy managing the mess.  It's a vicious cycle: When life gets hectic, it's easy to become paralyzed, not knowing what to tackle first.  As the physical mess grows, so does the emotional chaos.

Clutter Reason # 3: I cling to the Past.  We develop attachments to things because we remember what life was like with those items.  Acknowledging that life has changed is hard, especially when we left behind a time that we valued.  But accepting the new me lets me shed leftovers from the past.

I took many classes in Psychology, knowing the three main reasons and writing them down on a blog, still has not gotten me very far in letting go of my emotions. And getting the clutter cleaned up.  I have got to get my physical and emotional person together somehow, any suggestions?
