Thinking about the City Dark

Image
I think I want to explore more about what is out there and the beauty. "Seeing the universe around us tell us about our own part of the universe, and to close that door....would change the character of humankind entirely" (Kuhn qtd. in City Dark).  That one sentence speaks volumes in itself.  People need to slow down in this world, they are running way to fast. You can find that in the stories of your Elders if you will take the time to listen to their stories. If you are fortunate enough to have a grandparent, or great-grandparent alive, sit back and listen to their stories.  They have plenty to tell.  My grandpa was Cherokee, he farmed by the moon, his crop depended on the weather, and nature was very important to him.  Some of you are so young now, that your parents may be my age, and if they don't pass the ways of nature down to you, you will miss so much.     If the door is closed, I don't know what would happ...

Generations of Star Gazing and Moon Watching

Image
My grandpa was Cherokee and he would have been the one who started the night watch for me.  He use to grow acres and acres of planting the freshest vegetables and the biggest watermelons.  He did everything by watching the moon, the night sky, and how the stars were showing, what the next day would bring.  From this generation, my dad has his own theory and beliefs about the night sky.  This is a generational thing for my family.  I have one son, Chris, who lives out in the country with my parents that has a huge, expensive telescope.  I have another son, Brian who has always stayed with me and he had a glow in the dark constellation book when he was very young, and a cheap telescope.      When I was young, I can remember sitting outside with grandpa late in the evening, watching the sky out in the country.  The wolves would howl on a full moon, and there were plenty of owls back then t...

"The Many Sides of Death and Mortality"

I choose death.  I have been obsessive about death for some time.  I am representing the two poem, "Snowbanks North of the House" written by Robert Bly, and "The Cove" written by Dick Allen.  The reason I have chosen these particular poems that is about death and the realization of mortality because you will notice both relate to water in sadness.  The ocean waves and the lake itself holds mystifying images and echoes in a person's head.  The incorporation of the water, the moon, the darkness, the grief, and as always the ocean waves calling as it does for many.      The poem, "Snowbanks North of the House" when read out loud is not only spoken well but is very intense to the emotions of losing a son.  The mother generally stops just about everything she had always done.  The dad grieves separately, he cannot bring himself to accept this death at all.  Instead of them drawing together in their grief, each is t...
